Raised Bed Garden – Part II

Both boys are down for their afternoon nap, so I thought I’d jump on here and show y’all a bit of progress on our little garden. Our steel beds arrived very quickly and Blaine got to work putting them together. But first, he graded the garden area with the tractor. It’s just outside our kitchen window.

After grading, he assembled the boxes and placed them in position on top of some landscaping fabric.

We went back and forth with the layout. We ended up with this C shape (below), and I plan to put a small table or other feature in the center area.

Blaine’s folks were visiting during this little project. Btw, we are really liking this budget friendly sleeper sofa! If you’re in the market, give it a try. I might order linen Bemz covers for it one day.

Ready for our guests!

For the soil, Blaine mixed peat moss, manure, and vermiculite together. I’m honestly not sure of the ratios… maybe he’s reading and could let me know? (Update: it’s one to one to one ratio!)

Hathaway’s, our local nursery, bulk ordered the vermiculite for us

He mixed the soil together on a large tarp and then dumped it into the beds.

We have planted strawberries, lettuce, Brussel sprouts, radishes, broccoli, potatoes, onions, spinach, … and probably more that I can’t think of right now.

Since we’re not yet past our last expected frost date (mid-April is expected last frost), we’re keeping our herbs in the basement under grow lights. We have rosemary, tarragon, thyme, chives, parsley, lavender, oregano, and cilantro.

We also have seeds for warm weather veggies, which we’ll plant later (corn, squash, etc). Before planting anything, Blaine made some wooden templates for our square foot garden beds.

Let’s see how everything does! Will keep ya posted.

Hope y’all had a happy Easter. Jack was really excited about the Easter bunny this year and it was fun to watch him.

Here is the only pic I got of George on Easter. Also, I’m realizing now that he had his little outfit on backyards all day. 😛

Until next time,
